- 98 Punkte James Suckling (52024): Complex aromas of blueberries, pie crust, fresh flowers and currant bush with hints of baking spices like nutmeg. Medium
- to full-bodied with extremely fine tannins that are integrated and gorgeous. Graceful and refined, with super length. Interestingly, 20 of the wine was aged in large oak casks (2,500 liters), mostly from Slovenia. Try after 2027 but a joy to taste now.
- 98 Punkte DECANTER, Alejandro Iglesias: Since Gerald Gabillet's arrival in Mendoza in 2018, Cheval des Andes wines have gained in elegance and precision. In a great vintage like 2021, the results are spellbinding. Near-equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec, with 3 Petit Verdot the fruit comes from an old vineyard in Las Compuertas and a newer property in the Uco Valley. A fruity, floral wine, with minty hints and a subtle layer of oak that contributes spice and cedar notes. The palate is silky and energetic, with a vibrant freshness and polished, grippy tannins that channel it nicely into the long, perfumed finish. 2024-2040
- 98 Punkte Patricio Tapia, Descorchados (012025): Cheval des Andes is the joint venture between Terrazas de Los Andes (Möet Hennessy) and Cheval Blanc of Saint-Émilion. It debuted in Argentina with the 1999 vintage, and today Cheval has 32 hectares of very old vineyards in Las Compuertas, near the highest areas of the traditional Luján de Cuyo DOC, and 15 hectares of younger vines in Altamira, in the Uco Valley, at the foot of the Andes, for a total of 39 hectares in production with the material they use to make this red wine, which is the only one the winery produces, although there are plans for a second wine. This year the blend is 49 cabernet sauvignon (100 from Las Compuertas), 48 malbec (half Altamira and half Las Compuertas), and the rest is petit verdot from Las Compuertas. Since the 2015 vintage, we at Descorchados have noticed that Cheval has been shifting toward greater freshness and a less invasive oak treatment. This year, for example, there is an emphasis on larger formats. 60 of the wine was aged either in 400-liter barrels or in 2,500-liter foudres, leaving the traditional 225-liter Bordeaux barrels for a third of the total that spends time in oak. These larger formats with two or more uses, imply less effect on the aromas, although they do have an effect on the oxygenation of the wine. The result, in a cold year like 2021, is one of the fruitiest and most delicate Chevals we can remember. Take a look at the nose, which is pure fruit. The malbec dominates, but the cabernet contributes soft herbal notes. The palate is juicy and medium-bodied, with fine tannins and a sensation of freshness. Vibrant until the end. A subtle, elegant, and almost ethereal wine if you push it, and the best Cheval we at Descorchados have tasted. And we have tasted them all!.
- 97 Parkers Punkte WINE ADVOCATE, Matthew Laczy (082024): Th e 2021 Cheval des Andes is seductive and savory on the nose, leading with pure, earth-tinged aromas of pipe tobacco, turned soil, dried herbs and rich yet composed dark fruits. Exotic, dark spice notes and a pleasantly integrated framing of new oak accents appear with further aeration. The palate is deliciously supple and impressively layered, with a harmonious, long and ever-expanding finish that highlights extreme delicacy. The tannins are persistent yet composed, gently yet persistently lengthening the finish and melding nicely with the vibrant acidity underneatha beautiful combination of savory charm, serious depth and focused intensity. It's a blend of 49 Cabernet Sauvignon, 48 Malbec and 3 Petite Verdot that spent an average of 12-13 months in 50 barrique, 30 demi-muid and 20 foudre. 2025-2033
- 97 Punkte, VINOUS, Joaquin Hidalgo (022024): Light and elegant, the 2021 Chaeval des Andes is 49 Cabernet Sauvignon, 48 Malbec, 3 Petit Verdot. It achieves a feat that only cool years can provide: smooth texture, agile palate and just the right amout of freshness for a nuanced build. As it breathes, it begins to reveal notes of fresh cherry and plum, with a hint of menthol, maraschino cherries and a touch of pepper. It opens further with aromas of sandalwood and oak that complete the framework. This is a somewhat leaner, more ethereal Cheval than other years, but it has a higher level of precision. Its a wine inspired by Bordeaux, executes in a Bordeaux style, with Mendoza terroir. A wine without edges, its a polished red in the early stages of a long, balanced life. Drinking Window: 2026-2040
- 97 Punkte JANE ANSON, Inside Bordeaux: A wonderful Cheval des Andes, luscious, layered, nuanced, a kick of nutmeg spice, blueberry and damson fruits, salted cracker mouthwatering finish, with deftly-handled freshness the signature of a cooler vintage. Gérald Gabillet winemaker, joint venture between Cheval Blanc and Terrazas de los Andes. 70 new oak for ageing. 2026-2042. ;
