- 97 Punkte James Suckling (072025): Aromas of blackberries, black olives, lavender, violets and hints of oyster shells and iodine follow through to a medium body with fine, creamy tannins and a long and energetic finish. Linear and bright. Already showing nicely, but better in three or four years.

A vintage with reduced yield after issues with flowering. 75 new oak for ageing. The Mazzei family of Siepi is currently on its 25th generation of winemakers, based at Castello di Fonterutoli in Castellina in Chianti, farmed organically since 2006, with Siepi from a 6ha site. - 97 Punkte VINOUS, Antonio Galloni (072025): The 2023 Siepi is fabulous. Black cherry, plum, crème de cassis, incense, licorice, bittersweet chocolate and cloves soar form the glass. Even with all its intensity, the 2023 remains vibrant and beautifully poised. Sensual contours wrap it all together in style. Siepi is another wine that shows just how much these wines have moved in the direction of finesse over power. Sadly, yields are down 50 because of low fertility in the vineyard. 2028-2043
- 96 Punkte DECANTER: This single-vineyard blend of Sangiovese and Merlot offers bold, plummy black fruit scents with some menthol, spice, currants and chocolate. In the mouth it's poised, and vertical in shape. Plush black fruits and grilled herbs are accompanied by touches of spice and chocolate, and licks of iron and salt, with fine, chalky tannins and a silky mouthfeel. The minty acidity is persistent, leading into a long, delicate finish with some floral lift and just a hint of alcohol. Classy stuff.

The SangioveseMerlot blend is made from 40-year-old vines at between 240 and 330 m with a south-west exposure in a 10-ha plot in Castellina in Chianti. Merlot was picked 13 September, Sangiovese on 2 October. Deep glowing crimson. Very savoury, balsam nose with well-managed tannins and real zest but lots of tannin. Needs decanting if drunk now but probably better to cellar it. The Merlot confers velvety texture, the Sangiovese energy and tang. Quite a skill to get them to speak to each other, Id have thought.
